Tel Aviv Derby Girls is a roller derby league from Tel Aviv, Israel. We are calling everyone to come and join us! We are now recruiting players, coaches, refs, on and off skates, volunteers, sponsors and friends. Take a role in the upbringing of the first Israeli roller derby league!
What do I need in order to play?
To play you just need three simple things: To be at least 18 years old, to wear skates and protective gear, and to come with a great attitude and a lot of motivation. You don’t need a previous background in sports, you don’t need to be tall, short, big, or small and you don’t even have to know how to skate! You just have to want it!
Can I skate on Roller Blades (inline skates)?
Roller derby is played on old-school quad skates, the kind with four wheels in two rows. It’s okay to show up to practices with inline skates (roller blades) until you get your quads, but you cannot play with inline skates. The fundamental difference between inlines and quads doesn’t allow you to learn the skills you need for roller derby, so it’s a safety hazard for you, as well as your team mates.
So where do I get skates?
Sadly, there’s no way of purchasing quads in Israel, but you can order them online. Once you decide to join and order quads, the girls from the league will guide you through it!
What if I don’t want to play/I’m not 18 yet, but I still want to join?
No problem! The league is open for whoever wants to join (if you are over 18). If you’re over 18 but afraid of the contact part you can be a referee! Our refs practice with the league and have to know the game and learn to skate because they are also on skates during the game. Other than on-skate positions our league needs every single person who wants to join. Derby is a “DIY” kind of sport. The league was founded and is run by its skaters, and we run it ourselves. You can always come and help us with events, logistics, or (wo)man the many roles off-skates roles.
I’m a guy. Can I play too?
The TLVDG is a women’s league, all the players are women so the answer is no. But of course men are welcome to join us as refs/on administrative/off-skates positions. In fact, our ref squad is currently made up of the most awesome group of men you’ll ever meet.
Why isn’t there a roller derby league for men? Is it a female game?
Yes and no. From its invention roller derby was a women’s sport, and most leagues around the world are for women. On the other hand, there are leagues for men forming around the world, and they are just as cool. Today, there is no league for men in Israel, since we are women and we formed a league for ourselves. If a male league were to form, we would love to share our knowledge and experience. It’s all up to you, guys!
So when and where are we meeting?
We’re glad you asked! We’re meeting every Monday at 7 pm and Wednesday at 7 pm, at the skating rink in Sportek north, in Tel Aviv (It’s near Rokach Blvd, at HaYarkon park.) The skating rink is by the climbing wall.
If practice is canceled we’ll announce it on the facebook page and by phone, and if you want to get in touch with us either mail us or send a message to the page admins!
Anything else I need to know before showing up?
It’s ok to start with roller blades if you don’t have quad skates. We also have some spare skates and protective gear you can use until you buy your own. So, it’s best to let us know before you come so we can make sure everything is ready for you. That way you’ll be able to start skating right away!
